What should a tradie quote include?

A good quote includes your business name, ABN and contact details, your licence number where your state requires it, a clear scope of work, a list of what's not included, time to complete, the price and whether it includes GST, how long the quote is valid, and your payment terms.

Clear quotes win more work and cause fewer arguments. The customer sees exactly what they're paying for, and "that wasn't included" is written down before you start. Each example below starts with notes as you'd type them in the ute, then shows the finished wording.

Prices are made-up examples. Use your own rates, and state clearly whether prices include GST.

The prompt

Dictate your notes into your phone, paste them in, and you'll have a quote in the format above before you've left the driveway. It's told not to touch your prices.

I'm a [trade] in [state]. Turn my job notes into a quote description a homeowner can understand.

Notes: [paste or dictate your notes]

Format:
1. Scope of work as dot points, each starting with a verb (Supply, Install, Remove, Prepare...)
2. Not included
3. Time to complete
4. Price, using only my figures. Do not change, round or add any prices.
5. One line saying prices are [inc / ex] GST.

Plain English, no sales talk. If anything in my notes is unclear, list a question for me instead of guessing.

Common questions

What should a tradie quote include?

Your business name, ABN and contact details, your licence number where your state requires it, a clear scope of work, a list of what's not included, the time to complete, the price and whether it includes GST, how long the quote is valid, and your payment terms.

Can I use ChatGPT to write quotes?

Yes, and it's a good use of AI. Give it your rough notes and your prices, tell it not to change any figures, and check the scope against what you agreed on site before you send it.

Should a quote include GST?

If you're registered for GST, state clearly whether your prices include or exclude GST so there's no confusion when the invoice arrives. Showing a single GST-inclusive total is usually clearest for homeowners.
